Seasonal Awards – Spring 2011

Well, well, it’s already that time again? It seems like just a few days ago I was making the Winter 2010/2011 post. I think these are my favorite posts to do, even though they’re the most work to format.

BUT, thanks to the nifty WordPress feature of allowing me to basically copy a post entirely and then edit it to my will, I’m going to save a couple hours writing this post this time! And it means I can add even more awards! Everybody wins!

Except I took probably three more days to write this one than the last one. I do apologize for my horrible estimate on dates. I’ve been busy recovering from the wisdom teeth deal, trying to memorize the shit out of this menu for my job (the names are all in Greek, oh my god), and watching TheSpeedGamers do their week-long, 24/7 Star Wars video game marathon to raise money for Direct Relief International. They’re some pretty funny guys, so if you have time, I suggest heading over to their site to watch and also donating if you can.

Alright, enough with the excuses, lets get started.

BEST OP SONG/VIDEO

This award is pretty self-explanatory. A show can win this for the song, video, or a combination of both. I don’t like making separate song and video categories because a lot of the time shows will win this award for a combination of both.

And the winner is…

GOSICK

No, I didn’t accidentally forget to edit this award. I’m not sure whether it’s a testament to how good the OP for Gosick is or how bad the OPs for this last season were that this has won yet again. Most likely the former, because liked nearly all of the OPs this last season. Anyways, as I said last time, I like the song a lot, and I like the storybook art-style that’s used for it.

Runner-ups:
The World God Only Knows II (Dat Engrish and techy visuals)
Ano Hana (I don’t care for the video that much, but I like the song so much that even if I hated the video it’d still be a runner-up)

WORST OP SONG/VIDEO

This award is pretty self-explanatory. A show can win this for the song, video, or a combination of both. I don’t like making separate song and video categories because a lot of the time shows will win this award for a combination of both.

And the winner is…

HANASAKU IROHA

Oh god I would rather listen to nails on chalkboard than that voice. The vocals don’t even seem to match well with the music, so the whole thing comes off sounding tone-deaf. I don’t understand how anyone could like this song.

Runner-ups:
None.

BEST ED SONG/VIDEO

This award is pretty self-explanatory. A show can win this for the song, video, or a combination of both. I don’t like making separate song and video categories because a lot of the time shows will win this award for a combination of both.

And the winner is…

GOSICK

What is it with Bones and making good OPs and EDs? Admittedly, I liked the first ED more than the second one, but the first one isn’t eligible to win since that was used during winter season. I still really like this one, don’t get me wrong. Despite the dreary atmosphere of the song and video, I enjoyed watching it after the end of every episode.

Runner-ups:
Steins;Gate (I actually don’t usually listen to the ED, but it has a nice rhythm to it)

WORST ED SONG/VIDEO

This award is pretty self-explanatory. A show can win this for the song, video, or a combination of both. I don’t like making separate song and video categories because a lot of the time shows will win this award for a combination of both.

And the winner is…

HEN ZEMI

Fanservice, anyone? The song also bothers me for some reason. Maybe because it’s as strange as the show is.

Runner-ups:
None.

MOST DISAPPOINTING SHOW

Again, a pretty self-explanatory title. This award can actually be given to a show for being overall disappointing, or just having an extremely disappointing moment or two.

And the winner is…

snap1

ASTAROTTE NO OMOCHA!

I would have used a more fitting picture, but I’m too lazy to pull up the episodes and get one. Anyways, this was an obvious choice for winning. I mean, there were other shows just as disappointing, but when you add on that I really, really, wanted this show to be good so I could rub it in people’s faces that didn’t even give it a chance, that sealed the deal. It taunted me with five episodes that were quite good, then decided to be crap. For shame.

Runner-ups:
Hen Zemi (I thought the OVA was pretty funny, which is why the TV version was all the more disappointing)
Dog Days (If it hadn’t faffed about so much, it would have been so much better)

BEST CHARACTER

Lalala writing random things here even though no explanation is needed~

And the winner is…

snap3

KEITH GOODMAN/SKY HIGH [TIGER & BUNNY]

This was a tough category to decide a winner on, but Sky High won out in the end. What I greatly admire Sky High for is his lack of arrogance. Sure, he flaunts around his “King of Heroes” title, but it’s never to say he’s better than the others; he’s just playing his role. He just wants to meet people’s expectations. Throughout the show, you can see hints of him actually looking up to Kotetsu/Wild Tiger, most likely for his ideals. Ranks don’t mean crap to him, he just wants to fit the role of the “best hero” so people have something to look up to. He even patrols the city at night even though the heroes get notified immediately of any crime that happens anyways. It’s normally hard to pull off a character like this without them seeming at least a bit selfish in some way, but Tiger & Bunny managed to do it, which makes Sky High my favorite character for the season. Sky High just needs a hug~
BONUS: Here’s some pictures I didn’t use for Sky High.

Runner-ups:
-Rintarou Okabe/Hououin Kyouma [Steins;Gate] (Mad scientist~ is one of the most interesting characters to watch)
-Kotetsu Kaburagi/Wild Tiger [Tiger & Bunny] (Kotetsu is still a really likeable guy, but his talk of what it means to be a hero is starting to get old)

FUNNIEST SHOW

This is a tough one. Shows will not only be graded based on how much I laughed, but how hard I laughed, the type of humor, etc. The winner for this award could very well come down to a coin toss each time.

And the winner is…

snap2

FIREBALL CHARMING

This was a toss-up between Fireball Charming and 30-sai no Hoken Taiiku. While I laughed more during 30-sai (maybe simply because it was longer), I preferred Fireball Charming’s sense of humor more. While I like random humor when pulled off well, it can’t match clever wordplay. Especially when that wordplay is well-timed dialogue.

Runner-ups:
-30-sai no Hoken Taiiku (Random humor done right)
-The World God Only Knows II (Parodies. What more is there to say?)

WORST SHOW

Do I have any ambiguous award titles? I’m not even going to bother explaining this one.

And the winner is…

snap2

HANASAKU IROHA

I already wrote in my Dropped post about why I hate Hanasaku Iroha so much, so I won’t repeat myself. Instead, I guess I should say why this is winning. Normally shows that haven’t finished airing aren’t eligible, but dropped shows won’t be finished, so they may as well have finished airing. It’s the same logic for why only shows I watch are eligible for these awards in the first place. Also, though other shows were rated lower than Hanasaku Iroha was, I see a difference between a “bad” show and a “disappointing” show, and I don’t mix the two.

Runner-ups:
Deadman Wonderland (The fact that it practically jerked off to how dark it was was incredibly disturbing)

BEST SHOW

No use for an explanation, obviously.

And the winner is…

snap3

GOSICK

Gosick was never meant to be judged based on how good its mysteries are. Those are just there to provide a more interesting setting for character development than characters talking back and forth ceaselessly about themselves. It also made me care about the main characters more than I have since probably ToraDora, if not more. Gosick was truly a show that I felt privileged to watch, rather than feeling obligated to.

Runner-ups:
The World God Only Knows II (I’m a fanboy, it can’t be helped)
[C] The Money of Soul and Possibility Control (For all its faults, it was still fun as hell to watch)

TROLL AWARD

snap4

This is a very prestigious award, and not just because it’s the only one I have a picture for. This award is completely subjective: I can award it for a good reason, or a bad one. While the basis is always trolling, there’s a difference between annoying trolling and respectable trolling. So basically, you never know who could get this award.

And the winner is…

snap4

KOMUGI MUSASHI [HEN ZEMI]

This guy. This guy. He is practically the exact definition of troll. Everything he does serves a purpose that nobody initially suspects. Every time Matsutaka thinks that he’s hitting on her or something, it turns out he was just doing an experiment or something else random. Komugi did some really demented, yet creative things throughout Hen Zemi, and for that, he’s earned himself the Troll Award.

Runner-ups:
Hummingbird [Deadman Wonderland] (Oh, I’m so sweet and innocent! …Lol, nevermind, time to cut you up)
Daigorou [30-sai no Hoken Taiiku] (GOD SKIRT FLIP!)

And thus ends this last season’s seasonal awards! Again, apologies for the delays on this coming out. Now to go back to memorizing that menu (first day of work is tomorrow… so not ready).

So much hatred for Hanasaku Iroha. :(

Agreed Gosick is lovely though. I’m enjoying it! (or more like I’m enjoying Victorique.)

    • Riyoga says:

At least I agree that Hanasaku Iroha is pretty, right? I just can’t stand Ohana. Personal beef and all that.

Gosick was always about Kujo and Victorique, not the mysteries. If people realized that, they’d enjoy it SO much more.
      But yes, Victorique is adorable.

  2. Marina says:

I totally have to agree on Hanasaka Iroha having the word OP song that season. AUGH that little kid voice just grates on my ears. Both themes for GOSICK were simply lovely, though.

    • Riyoga says:

I skipped that OP every time. So bad.

Bones always seem to do awesome OPs and EDs. I loved Star Driver’s, too. And of course the pretty much famous first OP for Darker Than BLACK.
