Fall 2011 Impressions (And Shana Blogging Plans)

It’s pretty early for me to be doing this post already, but I decided I didn’t want to be the last person to do one of these posts this time. Though I may be the last person regardless.

This season looks like it’s going to be pretty damn awesome. A lot of good shows are coming up. And not to mention, SHAKUGAN NO SHANA SEASON 3. At first I was going to make this post similar to what Glo did, but he beat me to the punch. So looks like I’m just doing a normal post.

I know what you’re thinking, “A normal post? You mean with pictures for each show and clever formatting and everything this time?!”

I will, however, be talking about my blogging plans for Shana at the end of the post.

That’s about 28 shows if I’m counting that correctly. Not too hefty a season, but it certainly isn’t a lightweight. Not to mention, there are a lot of shows I’m seeing that I like, in contrast to not being too impressed with the summer chart/lineup.

Battle Spirits: Heroes

Saving the world, one card game at a time! Yu-Gi-Oh! was awesome (though only the first season), but pretty much every other trading card game show sucks.

Busou Shinki Moon Angel

This show sounds like it can be pretty neat. It could be dumb too. It’s only 3-5 minutes long for each episode, though, so I’m willing to give it a shot.

Cross Fight B-Daman

I don’t see how this concept could make a good show. Like, at all.

I didn’t watch the original show at all, so I don’t really have any motivation to watch this at all.

An abnormal shoujo story? Normally shoujo is centered around some romantic interest, but this one just seems to be about living life.

Mobile Suit Gundam AGE

KIDS IN ROBOTS IN SPACE. I don’t really see this appealing at all to pretty much anyone except children.

Guilty Crown

Original anime, Code Geass writers, Death Note director, etc. Honestly the fact that it’s original, has some of the Code Geass writers, and the director did Death Note doesn’t automatically mean this will be a good show. I mean, come on, Death Note was pretty much already written for him, guys. And just because the writers did Code Geass doesn’t mean every other story they wrote is automatic gold. There are plenty of authors that gained fame for a single work they’ve done, and all their other work is mediocre at best. And I’m not just talking about anime here, it’s the case for novel/book authors, too
Regardless, noitaminA shows have managed to, for the most part, consistently be good, so I’m willing to watch.

The synopsis mentions something about solving mysteries and time travel, both of which are awesome yet easily messed up. But who cares because *insert noitaminA sticker here*

Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon

Sup Code Geass S3.
Anyways, despite the synopsis sounding eerily similar to Code Geass, this could be a pretty good show. Lets just hope it isn’t another Sacred Seven, yes?

Persona 4 The Animation

I’m split on this one. It looks like it could be a pretty sweet show, but I don’t really want to watch it before I play the Persona games. On the other hand, I feel like watching the show could entice me to play the games sooner.
I’ll probably watch the show, because if I wait for me to play the games, I’ll probably get the “hurrdurr, adaptations” mindset and suck all the fun out of it.

Shinryaku!? Ika Musume

HELL YEAH MORE IKA MUSUME. The only thing that worries me is that there was a director change. I just hope this doesn’t affect the quality of the show.

Easily one of the most hyped shows this season besides Guilty Crown, it’s more of Gen Urobuchi doing his thing. This last season had a severe lack of his type of grim writing, so getting this show is a nice treat.

Haven’t watched the first season (I’ll get around to it eventually… maybe), so I won’t be watching this.

Generic harem show of the season. No interest at all.

Kimi to Boku.

Part of me baffles at how these kind of shows exist, part of me finds this gender-swapped K-ON hilarious, and another part of me is curious to see how it’s received in comparison to K-ON. Time will tell, I suppose.

Fujilog 2nd Season

Haven’t seen the first season, so no interest.

Mashiro-Iro Symphony

Generic softcore porn show that pretends to be generic harem show of the season. No interest.

Last Exile: Ginyoku no Fam

I know you don’t need to have seen the original Last Exile to watch this, but I wouldn’t feel right watching it without having seen the original. I’ve heard good things about Last Exile, so I’ll get around to it eventually.

Tamayura ~hitotose~

To put it bluntly, this sounds extremely boring. I’m not really into photography, so I’m even less enticed. I bet my friend who’s into photography will watch this, though, so maybe I can ask for his impressions and write a post with them or something.

Sekai-ichi Hatsukoi

So apparently rape is the new way to confess your love. Who knew?
It reminds me of the joke in Baka Test (season 1, episode 3) where Shouko takes Yuji to the movies, then when he tries to run, she tasers him and drags him in anyways. Then Minami and Shimada get all googly-eyed and say that they basically have the type of relationship everyone should aspire to have.
…What was I talking about? Oh yeah, this crap gets a second season? The most positive thing I can say about it is that I hope it gets stream on niconico so that I can see the hilarious comments to go with it. That’s the only way I’d get within 100 meters of this damn show.

Lupin III (4th Untitled TV Series)

I haven’t watched more than two random episode of Lupin III on Adult Swim. I know, I know, insert *HEATHEN* jokes here. But all it means is that I’m not qualified to watch this one.
Not that I really have any desire to, anyways.
*dodges flying stones as he runs away*

Phi Brain: God’s Puzzle

I sure hope that title is correctly translated, I did it myself right off the top of my head because I’m too lazy to look it up.
But anyways, this looks pretty damn interesting. A linear puzzle story? (Read: a mystery that lasts the entire show so there’s a goal that’s always being worked towards?) That sounds like it could be pretty damn awesome. Lets hope it doesn’t disappoint.

Bakuman 2

The first season of Bakuman suffered from serious pacing issues, and unless the staff learned their lesson, it’s going to be more 1-2 volume episodes. However, the story is finally at the good part, so even with pacing issues this should be more enjoyable than the first season. The struggles that come with being a published mangaka are far more interesting than the journey to become one.

I Don’t Have Many Friends

I’ve read the first few chapters of the manga, and it was alright. It wasn’t really my type of humor. I’m willing to give the anime a shot, though.

Love Me Seriously

Oh wow, two porn shows in one season? I sure hope this isn’t a sign of things to come.

Future Diary (Mirai Nikki)

I’ve been holding off on reading the manga because I heard about the anime adaptation around the time I found out the manga was popular as hell. Apparently the biggest appeal behind the series is the yandere female lead, who is apparently the best yandere in existence, and who all other yanderes should aspire to be like. So basically she’s the Shana/Kurisu to everyone else’s Fumino (Mayoi Neko Overrun).

Shakugan no Shana III (Final)

Wait it’s one of the late starters of the season? Starts in mid-October?
Actually I completely forgive them because that’ll give them even more extra time to work with the content of the last light novel, which comes out on September 10.
If you guys have seen the last two season, you better be watching this show. If you haven’t watched the last two season, have you been living under a rock? Watch them and get ready for this season!
Remember how everyone thought Steins;Gate was going to suck because Chaos;Head sucked, then they turned out to be wrong and are now pretending like they never said that? This season will do the same thing. All the Shana haters are being pretty vocal, but this season is going to be fucking amazing. The last two seasons can’t even compare. Even if they were combined, they can’t touch the fucking awesome of what is about to unfold.

C³ -CubexCursedxCurious-

There’s been a lot of negative opinion based on the synopsis for this one. I’m going to clarify why this is the most inaccurate (hopefully) synopsis ever.
First, here’s a trailer.

Now does that seem like a fanservice type of show? Maybe, but it looks much more like a “people murdering the hell out of each other” kind of show.
Second, while I can’t say 100% if it’s true or not, the title seems to be a reference to a really awesome, trippy movie. The Cube movie series was weird as shit, but it was awesome. I mean, come on, a hyper-dimensional cube that murders people by trapping them inside of it? How awesome is that?
A show that references those movies cannot possibly be bad.

Random comedies don’t really interest me anymore.

Aaaaaaaaand here’s the list of shows I’m guaranteed to watch:

Busou Shinki Moon Angel
Guilty Crown
Persona 4 The Animation
Shinryaku!? Ika Musume
Phi Brain: God’s Puzzle
Bakuman 2
I Don’t Have Many Friends
Future Diary (Mirai Nikki)
Shakugan no Shana III (Final)

Alright, blogging plans for Shana.

I said before I would episodically blog it, and I plan to keep that promise. What I want to do though, is kind of turn the posts into a chat hub for watchers, sort of like a forum in a way. So what I’m going to do is schedule each post on episodes to come out right after they’re done airing in Japan. They’ll be blank posts with just a general message by me saying something along the lines of:

“You may discuss everything that has happened before this episode in the comments, express your excitement for the episode that just aired, post theories, etc. However, you cannot spoil anything in the episode that just aired  until this post has been modified to be an actual episodic post. Then you may write whatever you wish about the episode. I will watch the episode very shortly after it has been subbed, so it should only be a few hours after it has been out that the post will be updated.”

Basically that’s it. Posts will publish after episodes air, but will be blank. You can’t talk about what happens that episode yet. After I watched the episode subbed, I’ll edit the post to be an actual episodic, which people can then discuss the episode normally.

It’s kind of an iffy way to do it, but it’s probably the most forum-like format I can do this without making an actual forum, so yeah.

If anything changes in the plan, I’ll probably post an update or something.

Working!! is great , happy to see season 2

    • Riyoga says:

I keep seeing mixed reviews on it. Some people love it, but then other people hate it. I’ll get around to watching it eventually and forming my own opinion.

  2. It really does sound like a decent set of shows while Fukuyama Jun looks to be incredibly busy, ha. I’m looking forward to the new Bakuman installment (it wasn’t perfect but was still engrossing), the new noitaminA titles are always a top priority, and of course Shana. I also need to watch the first series’ of Last Exile and Working too but that’s likely to happen by then. Still have to finish out this season strongly and hopefully the next one won’t disappoint.

    • Riyoga says:

If this next season isn’t better than the last one then I’ll eat my shoes. Not that the last season was bad, per se, but this season should kick ass.

  3. Ritsuioko23 says:

*cough biased… Cough* seriously though what the hell is Shana even about? Couldn’t find it on YouTube so I’m not watching it.

    • Riyoga says:

You do realize that the whole point of seasonal impressions posts is for bloggers to post their opinions on the next season, right? Of course it’s biased, that’s what opinions are. That’s like complaining when you get milk with your cereal.

And why would you ever watch anime on YouTube? They get taken down all the time for copyright, and you can watch them in better quality nearly every other way.

Instead of taking the time to summarize Shana, and making a TL;DR comment, just read the synopsis here.

    • glothelegend says:

Lol….you still look for anime on Youtube? You’re an idiot.

      • Riyoga says:

He/She hasn’t seen Shana either. I can maybe understand ONE of those two things, but both? I don’t even know how you accomplish that.

Like I’m not even trying to be an ass, either. I’m genuinely baffled.

  4. glothelegend says:

    A) Shakugan no Shana isn’t the best anime this season, it’s the best anime this year.
    B) Working! was FUCKING AWESOME.
    C) UN-GO has time travel? I’M IN.
    D) Porn shows keep appearing more and more frequently. It’s BAD NEWS.
    E) I’m not watching C-cubed because it has a lot of C words in the title but none of them are cunt.

    • Riyoga says:

      A) Very true, point taken.
      B) I swear I’ll get around to watching it eventually.
      C) Well they’re solving mysteries in a future timeline according to the synposis. Even if they aren’t physically traveling, they’re at least communicating through time.
      D) It is. Why can’t they just be full-blown porn? I’d be okay with that.
      E) It’s not in the title but it looks like it has a bunch of cunts trying to kill each other. Close enough.
      F) FUCK YEAH.

  5. Marina says:

Riyoga, you’re the one major reason why I’m even giving the 2nd season of Shana another go and putting season 3 on my to-watch list. I hope my opinion of the 2nd turns around!

And nice season preview :) You always have a fun and to-the-point style.

    • Riyoga says:

I swear once you get to the second half you will understand the glory. The second season was slow as crap for the first half, but that’s because it allows it to EXPLODE into amazing-awesome-kick-ass for the second half. YOU WON’T REGRET IT.

I always thought I had a lazy and ugly style. One of these days I’ll add pictures and do nice formatting.
…But it won’t be any day soon, I bet.
