50 QuestionsPosted: March 24, 2012
Yes, I’m shamelessly jumping onto this bandwagon that AceRailgun somewhat unintentionally started. I had some other post ideas, but I haven’t thought them through enough to write them, so I’m saving them for later.
I actually originally wasn’t going to do these, but I thought of a good reason to do it not too long ago (other than to join in on the fun). Yes, I’m being a manipulative
bastard genius as I have an ulterior motive to doing these questions. You see, that poll at the end of my spring impressions post is pretty lonely… so I figured doing this post could also bring in some different, possibly more vocal readership in to vote on it. I’m not a masochist that wants a terrible show to win the vote, I’m just whoring myself out hoping I can give as many people entertainment/amusement as possible.
For those who have voted or choose not to, this’ll be the last time I link to it. For those of you who haven’t, It’d be lovely if you did go vote, as you can make me watch a gem I’m passing up, or torture me with something horrendous.
Either way, hope you guys at least get a kick out of reading these answers. I’m not going to include too many pictures or videos for this initial posting, but over time I may come back and add some. And just as a warning, I’ll probably live up to my namesake and have some longer answers.
While tempting to go with Keima Katsuragi, that’s just me being biased because he looks like me. Going by personality, I’d have to go with Khamsin Nbh’w. Partially because I still find his last name very amusing, but mostly because the third season has really let us get to know his character. While very much a wanderer, he knows where to be and gives it his all when he’s needed most. Plus, there’s just something interesting about characters that have lived for centuries on end.
I could have just gone with Shana, but honestly I love the series more than her herself. If I had to go with a character I undoubtedly loved, it’d have to be Dawn. Misty continued to follow Ash out of some tsundere love, May was an idiot (they had to actually bring her younger brother along to be the brains of the two), but Dawn was smart, had a dream she was working towards (wanted to be Pokemon Coordinator), and journeyed with Ash to get the trainer perspective of things. She even cheered for him during his big battles (sometimes with a cheerleader outfit and everything).
For making all the other girls Ash traveled (and will travel) with incompetent in comparison, Dawn wins my affection.
That and I like her hat.
Also she has long yet somewhat odd straight hair.
3. What is your favorite anime soundtrack?
Possibly a strange choice, but the one from the first season of The World God Only Knows. There are other, better pieces out there, but there isn’t a single track on that soundtrack that I dislike. They’re kind of odd, with them mostly being 1:30-1:50 long each, but there’s 40 tracks (if you exclude the tracks where different characters sing the ED) on it, and I love them all. It’s also the only soundtrack I’ve imported so far.
4. What is your favorite anime opening + animation?
OP and ED questions are a tough one, because I have horrendous memory for these kinds of things, meaning I’m almost guaranteed to go with something recent. To confirm that last statement, the winner is the latest Future Diary OP. It may not be quite as atmospheric as the first one (though I do like how it goes through each diary owner), but there’s something so entrancing about the Engrish, especially when the singer really gets into it starting around the second half.
5. What is your favorite anime ending song + animation?
Continuing with my horrible memory, this one is actually easy. The new ending to Pokémon: Best Wishes! is actually pretty damn good. It’s also corny as hell with all of the swaying, but I can’t help but be drawn into it after a short bit. I’m also not sure if Dent’s actually conducting correctly, but I’d guess not. It doesn’t really matter though, because what do kids know?
6. What is your favorite anime scene?
Err, it’s kind of a spoiler for those who I know are waiting to marathon it, so I’ll make it vague enough that they won’t know, but still be an acceptable answer. It was in the 19th episode of this final season of Shana, and my episodic on it was entirely dedicated to the scene. If you care enough, you can read me ramble about it for almost 2000 words. That 3-4 minute scene really helped me live up to the blog’s namesake.
Basically, I love scenes that lead to character motivations clashing against each other. When the ideals of characters, which essentially makes them who they are, get challenged, it’s intense to see exactly how it affects them. Those kinds of scenes always have a lasting effect on a character, whether it be one of anger or if their ideals were actually changed due to it. Because you’re not questioning someone’s opinion, you’re questioning the person themself.
7. If you could meet an anime character who would it be?
Assuming this means it in a “social gathering” kind of way, rather than a “sexual fantasy” kind of way, then it’d be Khamsin Nbh’w. Maybe a cheap answer since I’ve already used it before, but I’d want to meet a character that I think it’d be interesting to talk about things with. Seeing as I like philosophy and psychology and such, getting to talk to such a down-to-earth character that’s lived for centuries on end would probably yield some very interesting insight and topics.
8. What anime character is most similar to you in terms of personality?
Again, another question where I was tempted to go with Keima Katsuragi, but it’s lifestyle that we have in common, not personality (the gaming all day part, not the seducing women part, sadly).
My actual answer would have to be Ken Sugisaki from Seitokai no Ichizon. Around my friends, I’m a clown that will blurt out sexual stuff on a regular basis with no shame just for the hell of it, or to be funny. But when someone needs me to be serious, the jokes stop and I do the best I can to be there for them or say what they need to hear or whatever.
9. What is your favorite thing about anime?
The diverse stories that anime brings. Even with similar synopses, shows can turn out completely different due to execution. And a lot more anime comes out each season than American shows. There’s just more to check out.
10. What is your least favorite thing about anime?
It’s tempting to go for something meta, but that doesn’t really count for this question. If I had to go with something, it’d be some of the female voices. I’ve grown accustomed to it for the most part, but there are still a select few voice actresses that manage to hit an inhumanly high pitch that hurts my ears.
I can already sense you guessed in your head that I was going to say Shana and Yuuji, and you were wrong!
Though they’re pretty much a very close second place.
I chose Victorique and Küjo because Gosick’s entire selling point was their relationship. It wasn’t exactly obvious at first, but as more was revealed about the characters and the setting, it became obvious the show was about them. It handled it excellently, and was the first show in a while that made me care so much about the characters.
This guy is hilarious. Mijumaru is basically the class clown in this season of Pokémon. He does stupid stuff, overreacts to things, etc. The scene I took the above picture from had me and my roommate laughing for minutes.
…Pokémon count as animals, right?
13. What anime would make a good game?
I think a game that used a setting like Future Diary’s would be interesting. It’d have to be tweaked around to make it work (otherwise the game would just consist of Yuno dragging you everywhere), but I think it’s the perfect setting for something interesting.
Eternal Sonata (or Trusty Bell: Chopin’s Dream – Reprise, if you’re a PS3 user). Easy pick.
It’s a JRPG, which already makes for an obvious pick to be an anime, but it also has a wonderfully artistic and musical world that only anime could really do justice. On a general level, it also has a fascinating story with overarching philosophical questions such as what reality is, and the fear of death and how it affects our judgement and perception of people. It also tackles some minor stuff, such as how dictatorships are evil and the bias that darkness is evil and light is good.
15. What was the first anime you ever watched?
First one I watched that I knew was anime was Naruto.
If that doesn’t count, then To LOVE-Ru, because I thought it was porn.
16. Do you think you’ll ever stop watching anime?
If it ever gets to the point where nothing is being made except for K-ON! ripoffs and shameless fanservice shows, then yes. I doubt it though, because there’s always gems to be found. Far more likely is that somehow a way to stop piracy will be found, so I won’t be able to watch even if I wanted to.
17. What is your favorite genre of anime?
I don’t have a favorite genre. I tend to lean towards shows that have characters I find fascinating or fun to watch, but that’s not genre-specific.
18. What is your least favorite genre of anime?
I’d say moe, but that’s not a genre. Any show that has boring or annoying characters, but again, that’s not genre-specific.
19. Are you open about watching anime with people you know?
Only if they’re interested. Most of my friends actually like anime though. Some of them due to my influence, but most of them found an interest for anime on their own.
20. Have you ever been to Japan?
I have not. Not sure if I’ll go anytime soon, either. I may want to learn some actual Japanese before going, so I’m not just another baka gaijin that all of the Japanese make fun of. I want to be able to understand what they’re saying when they insult me.
21. What anime was the biggest let down for you?
Astarotte no Omocha.
The first half was genuinely good! I’m not kidding!
Why won’t anybody believe me?! The second half was just utterly horrendous, lolicon-pandering garbage.
22. What anime was better then expected?
Tiger & Bunny.
Not that I went into the show expecting it to be bad, but it was a helluva lot better than I expected it to be. Eagerly awaiting those movies.
23. What is the best anime fight scene?
I could say “every gym battle in Pokémon”, but I think that’s cheating. Instead, I’ll go with the last episode of Star Driver.
Pretty much the entire show was building up to that last episode, so when it happened, goddamn was it intense. The fanbase had a thread on /a/ and we all watched it on the shitty Keyhole TV broadcaster thing. Goddamn I loved Star Driver’s fanbase. I’ll miss them.
24. Who is your anime waifu?
Obvious answer was obvious, sorry.
25. What was your favorite video game as a child?
It still is my favorite game. Too bad it never got a proper sequel.
26. Most Embarrassing moment?
I caught myself swaying to the newest Pokémon: Best Wishes! ED the other day.
I think my roommate saw me do it, too.
27a. Can you drive?
Nope. I’ve been old enough to get my license for a few years now, but I have no need for one, seeing as I live in the dorms at my college and most my friends are within walking distance. I like walking anyways.
27b. Do you own a car?
Seeing as what my answer was to the previous question, this answer is an obvious one. Nope.
28. Are you mature?
If I don’t know you, sure. If you’re a friend, it’s like I never graduated junior high.
29. What year were you born?
1991. I’m almost 21! It certainly won’t make me act any more mature, though.
30. Do you prefer cats or dogs?
Cats. They’re condescending and misanthropic towards the general public, but if they like you, they won’t stop following you around and sleeping on your lap.
So they’re basically me in animal form.
31. Describe yourself physically.
As I’ve said before, I look like Keima Katsuragi. There isn’t much else to add. The height, hair, glasses, everything is basically me. Except I don’t wear a school uniform, and I guess my hair is a bit darker. Oh, and my eyes aren’t brown, they’re blue-green. But they’ll lean more towards either color depending on how light it is outside (or inside). And if it wasn’t obvious by my eye color, I’m white as hell (75% American and 25% English).
32. What would you name your first child?
If it’s a boy, I have no idea. If it’s a girl, then Ariel.
It’s not like I love the Little Mermaid or anything, but there’s just something about the name that just sounds so… I don’t know. I can’t describe it. I do really love the name though.
33. What is the worst injury you have ever had?
I’ve never broken a bone, so nothing in that category. I remember being hospitalized once, but I can’t remember why. I know I threw up a lot and needed fluids injected into me to prevent becoming dehydrated though.
If I were to count back when I was so young I don’t even remember, then I fell off the kitchen counter and landed on my face. My gums turned all grey and such apparently. It’s most likely why I have sensitive teeth. I also know there was another time where for some reason I refused to drink anything, so I eventually passed out and needed to be taken to the hospital in order to rehydrate me, but that doesn’t count as an injury, so I guess the face-plant wins.
Man, I had one dangerous youth.
34. What is your worse habit?
I pick at my nails and the skin around them. I usually don’t do enough to cause any damage, but there are times where I don’t know when to stop.
35. Do you drink or smoke?
I don’t drink, because alcohol tastes like dog piss.
I don’t smoke, because my body works hard enough with the minimal amount of food I give it. Smoking would just make me feel guilty towards it.
36. Do you have a tattoo?
I considered it once, but I probably will never get one. I’ve heard it hurts like hell, and I’m a pansy.
37. Are you a morning person or a night person?
Night, easily. 5:00am is my regular time to go to sleep, if I go to sleep at all. My nightly habits have only gotten worse over time.
38. Have you ever slept past midday
I’ve woken up at 6:00pm before. This wasn’t even due to my staying up that late, I was just so tired I slept for over 14 hours. It was a damn good sleep, though.
39. Do you regret anything?
No, and I never will. I always try and do what I think is the best choice, with the occasional dumb decision, but every decision, bad and good, has shaped me into who I am. Saying I regret something would be like saying I regret my own existence.
Plus, it’s easy to say, “Oh, I wish I had done that instead”, but you never know if that would have actually had a worse outcome than the one you got.
40. Can you count the number of friends you have on one hand?
I can count my close friends on one. Friends in general, probably two. I’ve always favored being close to a small group of people, rather than being a throwaway friend to bunch.
41. Do you wear glasses?
Yes. I won’t ever get contacts because the thought of touching my eyes freaks me out. Besides, glasses shield my eyes from the wind and small projectiles.
42. Are you a picky eater?
Very much so. I’m a bit more open now, but there’s still a ton of food that I don’t want anything to do with.
43. Would you die for someone?
possibly never-to-exist children, yes. As for everyone else that would normally make the list, odds are dying for them wouldn’t make them as happy as you’d like to think. They’d probably be more miserable.
44. If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
The ability to cure any disease.
I don’t want to be immortal (I’ll probably be sick and tired of life by the time I get that old), but there’s nothing worse than someone dying without getting to live out their natural lifespan and doing what they want to do, especially if it’s something completely out of their control.
45. Do you believe in the supernatural?
I do not. If we’re talking supernatural as in magic and curses and superstitions and such, I think it’d be cool if it were real, but I heavily doubt it does.
If we’re talking religion, I still don’t believe it, but I have no qualms with those who do, only those who try to force their beliefs on others. I hate zealots on both sides of the argument. My only exception is when religion is thought of as a replacement for science. I was furious a couple years back when a news report came out that said a family refused to admit their sick son to the hospital since they were going to pray his sickness away instead. He ended up dying. At the least they could have taken him to the hospital and prayed!
Despite what some people say, religion and science can coexist, you just have to let them.
46. Would you rather be rich or famous?
Rich. Computer parts don’t buy themselves! And I’m a social recluse, so being famous would probably scare me to death.
47. Have you ever committed a crime.
Sort of but not really. One time I was at Best Buy with a friend and we saw this little, soft soccer ball toy. We figured some kid had left it there by accident or something, and it didn’t have a sales tag on it. I looked around the store and didn’t see any kids, and I knew Best Buy didn’t sell any (of the toy, not kids), so I just pocketed it and we left.
Is it stealing if you take something from a store that the store doesn’t actually sell?
Time Traveler or ghost?
Time traveler. I’d go back in time and collect every notable philosopher who ever existed so I can bring them all back to the present day so they can collectively facepalm at society. Or maybe that’s just my wishful thinking.
If I can’t time travel with other people, then I’d just talk to each of them. I wasn’t lying when I said I love a good philosophical discussion.
49. Does someone have a crush on you?
I wish. I’m kawaii uguu~
50. Are you in a relationship?
Nope. And I don’t think I really want to be in one either, at least for the time being.
