Sneak Peek: Medaka Box, Haiyore! Nyaruko-san, Jormungand, Shiba Inuko-san

Time for some more sneak peeks, this time, with more negativity!

But there’s also a decent amount of positivity, too.

Medaka Box

Medaka Box bored me immensely. I appreciate they’re at least doing something a bit new with the school setting (the school itself looked amazing), and the inspiration from Haruhi is obvious, but I’m one of the few people who only saw Haruhi is being average, so there wasn’t much to appeal to me here.

It’s kind of a shame, because I could see myself liking the show if it just tweaked around a few things. Right now I really don’t care about the characters or what they’re doing, so if there was some extra purpose and/or motivations behind what was going on, it’d help. “Girl who goes around fixing other people’s problems” doesn’t really cut it for me. The only reason a show with a similar premise, MM!, didn’t bore me was because it was funny. Medaka Box doesn’t have anything else to back itself up.

Though I have heard the second episode is better, so there’s still a chance my opinion will turn around by the third episode.snap2

Haiyore! Nyaruko-san (Moethulhu)

Alright Xebec, I’ll admit it, I’m impressed.

I was worried that this TV series was going to ruin the type of humor this series usually goes for with its individual shorts, but the humor was actually really good in this. In fact, it was probably even better, comedic-wise.

You just can’t help but be drawn in to the wacky antics of NyarIko, she’s just so damn hyper, but manages to not be annoying about it. It’s like watching a kindergartener that just drank coffee. It’s also amusing that Mahiro doesn’t take her shit when she goes too far. There are also references to other anime, such as how she’ll shout out names of Gundams whenever she gets hurt. I’m actually kind of interested to see if she’ll shout out lists of different things each episode, but I’m pretty sure there are enough Gundam names to last this entire show.

Even though the big joke is that the show is “Moethulhu”, the show isn’t really a moe show. NyarIko looks moe, but she’s a complete psychopath when she wants to be, and she really only took an attractive form so she could get into Mahiro’s pants. I think in the process of making the “Moethulhu” jokes, people actually began to think the show was a moe show. It never was one; it’s always been an absurd comedy. The flash shorts had uncensored fork stabbings and NyarIko trying to make body pillows of Mahiro, and so far it seems like Xebec is aware of this.

Oh god I’m going to have nothing left for the preview if I keep typing. Okay, point is, the show is hilarious, you should watch it, and I hope the show grows to have more than just a cult following.

FUN FACT: This series is to me as the Fireball series is to Scamp. snap3

Jormungand

This show had a very distinct style to it, which I loved. I’m not usually one for gun porn, but when it’s handled the way it is in Jormungand, it’s entrancing to watch.

I’ve seen all of the comparisons to Black Lagoon, but I’m a heathen who hasn’t watched it, so I can’t comment on that. Just know that pretty much everyone in existence says this show is a lot like Black Lagoon, which unless I’m mistaken, is a very good thing.

It’s hard to really say anything after only one episode, especially because I have no idea what the purpose behind everything that happened was. I’m chalking it up as just being an introduction to the show and characters, so I’m giving it the pass for now, but I’m hoping future events are better explained.

Really curious to see where this show goes.snap4

Shiba Inuko-san

Oh my god this show was terrible.

If I recall, this is based off a 4-koma, and as to be expected, it was the most unfunny thing in the universe. It’s like R-15 all over again.

The only thing is that the episodes are only 1.5 minutes long, and with the OP taking up thirty seconds, the actual episodes are only a minute. Doesn’t change the fact that this show sucks, but at least it’s so short I can’t even start feeling physical pain before it’s over.

You HEATHEN!? How dare you not know the wonder that is Black Lagoon!?!?!?
    :p
This is precisely why I tried not to mention BL too much in my discussion of Jormungand, since every other blogger out there already did. Jormungand is the only one on this list that I’m watching, but I’ll be reading any further reviews you have of Haiyore! Nyaruko-san as the season continues. I’m surprised that you praised it, and may pick it up if you continue to enjoy further on down the line.

There are so many classic shows that I still need to watch. I’m going to kick myself into gear once I finish House M.D., and I only have a few episodes left.

I’ve been a part of Moethulhu’s cult following ever since I discovered the flash shorts. I’m slightly biased since I like Lovecraft’s stuff, but even just vaguely knowing the Cthulhu Mythos helps the enjoyment. Not that the show can’t stand on its own two feet.
The only posts I have left for the series is the preview and review, though. Perhaps I’ll throw up quick thoughts for each episode on Twitter to help out. I think you’d like the comedy, though.

I can’t remember for the life of me who it was that said it, but a good summary for the show was that if Polar Bear Cafe is the lighthearted comedy of the season, Moethulhu is the loud, hyper, and occasionally darker comedy of the season.

I was late to the Black Lagoon party myself until someone recommended it to me for RT’s Secret Santa. It is totally worth marathoning both seasons in one sitting.

I may just do that. The first thing I need to take care of is Seto no Hanayome, since I’m still stuck about six or seven episodes in, but then I’m going to go on a rampage and watch a bunch of classics.
