Review List and Rating System

I got the idea for this page in the shower. Honestly, who doesn’t have their best ideas in the shower?

RATING SYSTEM:

While according to my scores it may seem like I don’t have any standards, that isn’t entirely true. I just don’t use rating/scoring systems like most people do. So, I’ve tried translating what my scores would mean into someone who uses the system normally/correctly. This is a very simple breakdown, and isn’t guaranteed to be completely accurate, but it should be close enough.

10 – Excellent show. Recommended.
9Good show. Recommended.
8Enjoyable show. You may not like it, but I still recommend giving it a shot.
7 –  Meh show. You might like it, but I didn’t. Not recommended.
6Bad show.
5Terrible show.
4Why did I watch the whole show again?
3Why this show got funded I’ll never know.
2I think I just went blind.
1This show gave me cancer.

Alternatively, you can read my ratings like this:

10 – No major complaints. Some minor ones are acceptable.
9At least one major complaint, or too many minor ones.
8More than one major complaint, or a combination of a multitude of minor ones and one major one.
7The point where I decide I’d rather have not spent my time watching the show, but I can see why others would enjoy it.
6I didn’t enjoy the show, but I can think of a few compliments for it.
5I didn’t enjoy the show, and I consider arguments defending it to be flimsy.
4The lowest score possible for any show I finish. If I finished it, it can’t get too low a score.
3Only shows I don’t finish can score this low. If I got through three episodes before dropping, it’ll probably get this score.
2If I got through two or three episodes before dropping and have only one or two compliments, it’ll get this score.
1The epitome of terrible. Finished one episode at most, and can’t think of any compliments.

  1. MkMiku says:

Your ratings pretty match with mine, although I tend to score a little lower. I haven’t heard many good things about Onii-chan no Koto, but I’m still willing to continue watching it.

    • Riyoga says:

Not often do I know someone who’s scoring system is similar to mine, mainly because I consider a 6 to be a bad show, whereas a 5 is supposed to be average.

A lot of people didn’t WATCH Onii-chan no Koto, so it’s best to ignore them. However, the show is a comedy, and as I’ve said a million times, it’s tough to argue the case for a comedy show since everyone has their own sense of humor. I thought it had pretty hilarious perverted humor, and the A.G.E. Explorers were fantastic whenever they had air time.

  2. Ken says:

You’re reviews are a bit generous but I do agree with you on most of your ratings. Moreover, I think it comes down to a preference in taste, which is what anime is all about.

    • Riyoga says:

I usually am pretty generous with my number ratings, though I’m not sure why. I guess I just don’t like giving lower number unless I genuinely didn’t like the show.
But that’s why I made this page: to reflect that I do that.

      • That’s understandable. I myself, usually have a good idea of the shows I’m interested in and usually don’t watch anything unless I’m sure I’ll like it. There are exceptions of course. So my personal ratings would figure to be fairly positive as well. In the future do you plan on giving reviews for older series? Plus, I take it you like T&B?

        • Riyoga says:

I’m usually the same with shows, except even if I have only a slight interest in it I’ll give it a shot. I like finding diamonds in the rough. And even if they aren’t diamonds, I usually end up enjoying the show regardless.

As for older series, yes. Just like with Kino’s Journey and Death Note, I review older shows when I get around to them. I usually don’t have a great amount of time to watch older shows, but there’s quite a few renowned shows that I still haven’t watched, so I try and get around to them eventually. I’m currently working on watching Seto no Hanayome.

Tiger & Bunny is fantastic. After the first two episodes, it was just alright, but after the third episode I saw signs of what it could become, and it met those expectations wonderfully. It’s gone from an enjoyable buddy-cop show to a fantastic narrative. The writer has crafted it perfectly so far, and I doubt the ending will disappoint either. The director also deserves credit though, because he knows exactly what scenes to show and how to present them.

  3. There are obviously lots of shows I want to watch at some point. Sometimes I’ll start them and they won’t pique my interest right away, so I’ll move on to something else that I think I might like more. I know most series don’t pick up from the start, but the allure of other series is too strong. I’m currently working through Honey & Clover and witnessing the consistent quality Noitamina showcases.

You summed up my thoughts on T&B quite well. You see a lot of commonplace characters and situations but the execution is flawless. I noticed the editing was great too, the show hardly wastes any time unfolding but it still gives you a lot to consume. Though, I was strangely disappointed they had announced there might be a second season due to the fact that I didn’t want to discover everything would pan out fine in the end just yet.

    • Riyoga says:

The second season announcement doesn’t necessarily mean things could end well. It could be about Heroes, having their reputation shattered, working underground to keep the peace. Or really anything could happen.

Though even if an ending is spoiled, it doesn’t really bother me. Just like reading the last pages of a book, the ending just makes me all the more curious about how the hell the story reached the conclusion it did.

      • I wasn’t extremely disappointed by the announcement, I just found the timing a bit odd. Though if a series is as popular as T&B is, then a second installment is pretty inevitable.

There’s plenty of territory to explore with the series and I’m sure they’ll do a good job handling the plot. There’s already quite a bit of satire in the show and with the whole Hero TV Live issue they could take it to another level. They could take it into Dark Knight mode and examine the fact whether we really need heroes. All the while I’m sure it will be damn entertaining.
